About the Carp dying in Lake Havasu

Apparently the news on the lake is not all about prehistoric piranha (the movie being made about Havasu) - but about the carp dying in the lake.

The following is a press release from the city:

A message from Lake Havasu City Manager Richard Kaffenberger regarding the carp die-off occurring in Lake Havasu and the Lower Colorado River

Visitors and residents enjoying our region over the coming weeks will become aware of the presence of an unusual number of dead fish in the water and along the shoreline of Lake Havasu and the Colorado River. The fish are native carp that have perished from an epidemic of the Koi Herpes Virus, or KHV. According to the Arizona Game and Fish Department, KHV affects only carp, goldfish and koi, and is not a threat to other species, including humans.

Fortunately, Lake Havasu visitors have nothing to fear from KHV. Unfortunately, however, the unsightly presence of dead fish and the odor associated with them is an unavoidable consequence of this natural phenomenon.

Lake Havasu City is actively working with community volunteers to help keep popular beaches and coves clean and clear of the dead fish. Given the large number of carp in Lake Havasu, and the limited resources available to keep up with the die-off, however, it is likely visitors will find dead fish in many areas of the lake and river. Parents of curious children and pet owners should take special care to keep from coming into contact with remains that may have washed ashore.

Experts tell us the water quality of Lake Havasu is excellent and swimmers have nothing to fear from KHV or its victims. The good news is we are told the effects of this phenomenon will decline over the coming weeks and eventually become just a stinky memory.

Summer and a Movie, Lake Havasu City

The windows are closed this morning. It is too warm to leave the windows open, and the air conditioner off. Typical for June in Havasu, but the first time this week. As I mentioned in a previous post, it has been unseasonably cool. But the pool is warming up again, so maybe we'll be back in the water.

As for water, last week Don and I took a walk along the Channel and they were filming the movie...the one about the prehistoric piranhas. Did I mentioned, it will be a 3-D movie? They haven't been announcing when they are filming (I assume so they will be left alone) and that day someone mentioned it was the last day of filming. But then I heard they filmed later that week.

There were a bunch of boats moored at the entrance of the channel (on the Nautical side) - covered with what appeared to be blood. Ewwwwwwwww!

Havasu's Unusual June

As you can see, the window in my den is open. For the last week or so I've had the air conditioner off for most of the day. It has been the most unusual June weather for Lake Havasu City. Our family has lived in Havasu for over forty years, and I can't recall a summer like this.

I enjoy the cool....but I wouldn't mind a little more heat, so I can use the pool But, it warmed up a bit today, and we did have the air back on. I will have to admit, I love being able to keep the windows open, so I can enjoy the fresh air.

Where did summer go?

Yesterday the temperature took a dive and we went from summer to spring. At the moment it is in the mid-seventies, which is very strange for a Havasu June.

I turned the air conditioner off yesterday and worked with the window open, enjoying a wonderful breeze.

Unfortunately the pool cooled off too.

But one thing about Havasu....I've no doubt it will heat up. So for now, enjoying the cool breeze.

Movie Making in Havasu

I meant to take a picture of *Main Street*, as it was spruced up for the making of the horror movie I mentioned in a previous post. Some of the buildings around our Heirloom Realty office were given a face lift, and had a bit of glitz and frills added, in the form of flags and banners.

A son of a friend will be teaching one of the movie's stars how to drive a boat. And they filmed near our office this week.

While I am not a fan of horror movies...maybe I will catch this one. :-)

Piranha 3-D in Havasu

A horror movie is being made in Lake Havasu, with filming scheduled to begin around May 11. Instead of a shark (Jaws) it will be piranha who terrorize the spring breakers.

I'm not much of a horror movie fan, but I imagine the activity will be good for the local economy.

Heating up in Lake Havasu City Arizona

It was such a beautiful Sunday I decided to work poolside yesterday. That is one great thing about laptops and wireless connections.

Those funny things floating in the pool are what is left of our solar cover. Don has cut it into circles. The circle are warming up the water (and easier to handle) - but still not warm enough for swimming.

The air came on today, but I turned it off and opened the windows. I am not quite ready to have the house closed up. While I love the heat come summer, I miss the fresh air (inside), when the house is closed up.
