Sunny Day in Lake Havasu City, Arizona

This afternoon Don and I took a walk along the Channel. Snapped some photos, including this one of a couple enjoying the sunshine. Temps were high today and when we got home Don made me some frozen Margaretas.

To our friends who live in colder parts of the country......I'm sorry.

Which Stockman twin?

This morning Don and I went to the Heirloom Realty office to get front row seats to the annual London Bridge Parade. My mom and Don's folks joined us. Our partner and friend, Starlit Porter was there with her family. Starlit's lovely daughter, Chasitee, is Young Teen Miss Arizona and was in the parade, as was several of Starlit's granddaughters.

Each year when the parade rolls around I remind myself I was in the first London Bridge Parade...38 years ago. I was a senior in high school (the first sophomore class of LHHS) and a song leader aka pom pon girl. What I remember most were how heavy those darn pom pons got as we marched on.

Today the young cheerleaders in the parade included the Stockman girls - I believe both were in the parade - but I only managed to snap one. Which one? I'm not sure. Those girls remind me how time flies, because back when they were very very small, my daughter, Elizabeth, worked for Parks and Rec, and the girls were in her group. Not such little girls anymore.

That time...it sure does fly.

Oh, did I mention....I am going to be a grandma! Elizabeth, is expecting the first of May. We are all very excited. She and her husband live in Sacramento, where she is a graphic artist and our son-in-law is in the Coast Guard. And the London Bridge logo she designed when she was in high school - I noticed today that it is still being used by LH City, on its London Bridge promotional material.

Lake Havasu City's Nautical Inn

This weekend Don and I lunched at the Turtle Bar at the Nautical Inn. The Turtle Restaurant - and their lake side bar - offers an excellent burger. One of the best in Havasu. And you can't beat the view. Even though the sky was mucky while we were there, from the fires in California.

While at the Nautical I decided to snap a photo of their motel/condos....because I have a question to ask...

The question?? WHAT WERE THEY THINKING??????

I just don't get the paint scheme...why paint a building, located at one of the most scenic areas of Lake Havasu, such gawdy colors? WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!?!?

Fall Arrives in Lake Havasu City

I am one of the few people that gets sad when Havasu's hellish summer weather cools down. Because that means no more swimming. Maybe if we had a heated pool I would feel differently.

It feels as if someone turned the thermostat down overnight. Temps plummeted in one day. And while I am sad...it is hard to get too depressed, since the cool air feels heavenly.

I was walking in the back yard with our Aussie and I have to admit, October in Lake Havasu city feels pretty terrific.

Annoyed at Pricing at some
Lake Havasu City Discount Stores

Here in Lake Havasu City we have several second hand stores. One that has been around a longtime is known as St. Vinny’s and another is Hospice’s, now located in the old DES building.

Last week Don and I stopped by both. I was impressed at the Hospice store. The items were attractively displayed and the prices were reasonable. I picked up a used card table and a few glasses.

We then went to St. Vinny’s, because we were looking for some second hand furniture, and weren’t able to find what we were looking for at the Hospice store. St Vinny’s had lots of used furniture. But, it didn’t take me long to figure out why they had such a large inventory. In my opinion, it was the prices. Yikes! I don’t know who is currently pricing their used furniture, but they obviously believe they are working for an upscale antique shop and not a second hand store.

Over the years I’ve donated a lot of used stuff to St. Vinnys. I figure it is a way to help a good cause make money, and offer a way for my neighbors to get a deal, particularly those families that need a little help (especially in these tough economic times).

I was appalled at how they priced the furniture - some of it was high for an antique store. And frankly, I’ve seen discount stores sell brand new furniture cheaper.

I hope someone at St.Vinny’s reads this blog and looks into the inflated pricing of its used furniture.

First, a store should look at its clientele – its target market. People that go into second hand stores are looking for a deal. If you have a broken down chair that is seriously worth $300, perhaps you should list it on eBay.

To those who are pricing the furniture at St. Vinny’s - maybe you need to take a second look at some of the stuff you’ve priced. When was the last time you looked at discount furniture stores, like Ikea?

And if you can get someone to pay inflated prices for broken down furniture, then that makes me more annoyed. Because many of your customers need help, not someone taking advantage of them.
